Who ever thinks they’ll be the victims of a house fire? I sure didn’t, but in 2001, that’s exactly what happened to me! I escaped safely and hope that you will take seriously, ways to protect your family, your pets and you.
Fire Safety Week 2015 is October 4th – 10th. This year the National Fire Protection Association is using a theme familiar with the Real Estate Industry. It’s about “location, location, location”!
Homeowners and renters should install smoke alarms in these strategic locations:
- every bedroom
- outside each separate sleeping area
- on every level of your home, including the basement
The NFPA reports that more than half of all fires occur between 11pm and 7am, when most of us are asleep. Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke spreads fast, triggers the detectors and gives inhabitants time to escape. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of a person dying in a fire in half!
So this year, during Fire Safety Month in October, in addition to testing your smoke alarms and changing the batteries, make sure you have one every floor, in every bedroom and outside every sleeping area. Also, it is suggested that you replace your smoke alarms every 10 years. Make time to do these important updates to your home. Read more about smoke alarms, installation and maintenance at the NFPA “Smoke Alarm Central” webpage.
While you’re at it, make sure you also install carbon monoxide detectors. Read more about proper locations at homesafe.com.
