One of the many things I love about Cedar Rapids is it’s location. Within four to five hours, I can be in Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha or Minneapolis. Recently I combined work and pleasure when I attended a continuing education class and visited some friends. Here are some of the highlights of this trip and things that Minneapolis is doing to be good stewards to our environment.
From the deck of our friends’ high-rise apartment, we looked out over the only natural falls on Mississippi River, St Anthony Falls. The falls provided the first hydro dam in the U.S. The hydro plant was originally on the west side of the river. Now located on the east side, the dam is owned and operated by Excel Energy.
Transportation options are plentiful, resulting in fewer cars on the roads. I took a train from downtown to Mall of America and saw many people getting on and off the train for work.
If you have a destination within the city you can rent a Smart Car. They’re easy to find parked along the street.
If you prefer combining travel with exercise, this is the place! Minneapolis is the America’s top bike-friendly city according to Bicycling Magazine. Just like the Smart Cars, you can find bikes available to rent in many convenient locations.
Oh and for a great way to tour the down town area, I encourage you to take a segway tour. What fun!
Because we live in Cedar Rapids, we took advantage of a short four-hour drive and had a great adventure exploring Minneapolis!
I’d love to hear about your travel adventures. Please post your comments.
